Frequently Asked Questions

  • Medication abortion can safely be completed up to 9 weeks and 6 days gestation (from your last menstrual period).

  • That is okay. On your Intake Form, indicate when you think it may have been, but that you are unsure. We will determine if an ultrasound is required for dating your pregnancy or not.

  • No. If you have an active Alberta Health Card, our service is free.

Clinic 38 is covered by Alberta health care. The medication required (which is very expensive), is also free for all Canadian women, thanks to the Federal Government.

  • Bloodwork is our way to keeping you safe. We do not routinely order ultrasounds. Your bloodwork and dating history provide a lot of information.

Also, some abnormal pregnancies (such as molar pregnancy, multiple gestations, ectopic pregnancy etc.), can have abnormal B-hCG, and require different treatments.

  • Surgical abortion refers to the procedure of Aspiration. The pregnancy is suctioned out by a healthcare provider instead of being passed by your uterine cramps.

Please see the following chart to explain the differences and ensure you are choosing the best one for you.

  • An abortion can be completed up to 20 weeks in Alberta (surgical abortion). In other provinces, up to 24 weeks.

If you require second trimester abortion, please contact Action Canada to help locate resources.

  • Take your time. Contact us when you are ready.
